The onlookers at the Mumbai International Airport were pleasantly surprised to see Karisma, Kareena and Ranbir Kapoor chatting animatedly on their way out.  While Karisma accompanied her sister for her ‘Heroine’ promotions in Dubai, Ranbir was there to celebrate his father Rishi’s 60th birthday with his mother Neetu. The Kapoor sisters met them at the airport before taking the same flight together.  For those who have no clue why this is such a big deal to see these cousins together, read on.

If you have no idea about the Kapoor Khandaan’s dynamics, Karisma-Kareena’s mother Babita has never seen eye-to-eye with Ranbir’s mother Neetu Singh. Though no one actually knows what made the two Kapoor bahus avoid each other for two decades, sources say the trouble started when Randhir Kapoor married his Sindhi girlfriend, much against the wishes of the Kapoor family. Things became worse when Babita left the Kapoor household when objections were raised about Karishma’s filmi aspirations. It is a known fact that women in the family are not encouraged to pursue their career in films and this is probably why Neetu Singh and Babita left the industry at the peak of their career to settle down after their respective marriages.

While Randhir and Rishi have openly bonded, appeared on shows and films (Housefull 2) their respective wives Babita and Neetu haven’t quite shared the same affection. The two former actresses have gone out of the way to avoid each other, a sentiment that occasionally trickled down to their children. So much so, that Neetu and her children were not invited for Karisma Kapoor’s wedding. While Rishi chose to go to the wedding, one can see the uncomfortable vibes between Karisma and him during the family photo shoot. So when Neetu’s daughter Riddhima was getting married, Karisma and her husband were the only ones invited. Karisma, however, didn’t attend her wedding. Similarly, there is no love lost between Riddhima and Karisma who are born one week apart from each other and at the same place. Riddhima has openly said that she has not even been formally introduced to Karisma’s husband ever.

Winds of change
The seeds of patch-up were sown at the premiere of Ranbir’s debut film Saawariya when Kareena openly praised her cousin and said, “We Kapoors are here to rock together.”  People at the venue were surprised to see her walk in with beau Saif Ali Khan and insist on sitting with Rishi Kapoor and Neetu despite being offered a separate enclave by the organizers. Earlier this year, Kareena and Karisma handed the Filmfare Critics award to Ranbir Kapoor and the three of them were seeing chatting happily at the event. In March this week, Karisma organized a family reunion in Goa for her son Kiaan’s second birthday. The two grandmothers were seen fussing over Karisma’s children and bonding with each other. Last heard, Even Kareena and Ranbir have given their consent to play siblings in Zoya Akhtar’s next. A big fat family reuinion, this.
